Comparing Image Compression Formats
JPEG (JPG) is the universal format for photography, offering small file sizes with lossy compression. PNG is a lossless format ideal for vector graphics, text overlays, and transparency, but results in larger file sizes. WebP is Google's modern format that combines lossy and lossless compression, delivering 30% smaller files than JPG at equal visual quality.
Which Format Should You Choose for Desktop Wallpapers?
For high-resolution photography wallpapers, high-quality JPG or WebP is recommended because Operating Systems convert wallpaper files into uncompressed GPU buffers anyway. For illustrations with sharp line art or transparency, PNG remains superior.
